Quick fact: After the death of Hazrat Umar (RA), the compiled copy of the Quran was passed to Hazrat Hafsa (R.A).

Explanation

During the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), the Quran was compiled into a single book form (Mushaf) under the supervision of Zaid bin Thabit (RA). This compiled copy was kept with Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), then passed to Hazrat Umar (RA) after his death, and upon Hazrat Umar's (RA) martyrdom, it was entrusted to Hazrat Hafsa (R.A), who was a widow of the Prophet (PBUH) and the daughter of Hazrat Umar (RA). Later, during the caliphate of Hazrat Usman (RA), this very copy was borrowed from Hazrat Hafsa (R.A) to produce standardized copies for distribution across the Muslim empire.

Good to know

The first compilation of the Quran took place after the Battle of Yamama, where many Huffaz (memorizers of the Quran) were martyred. Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), on the advice of Hazrat Umar (RA), entrusted Zaid bin Thabit (RA) with the task of compiling the scattered written fragments into one book. This Mushaf remained with the Caliphs successively — Abu Bakr, then Umar, and then Umar's daughter Hafsa — until Hazrat Usman (RA) used it as the master copy for the official Uthmanic recension.
