Quick fact: The compilation of the Quran into a book form was advised by Hazrat Umar (R.A) to Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A).

Explanation

After the Battle of Yamama, many Huffaz (memorizers of the Quran) were martyred, which alarmed Hazrat Umar (R.A). He approached Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A) and strongly urged him to compile the Quran into a single book form to preserve it. Initially hesitant as this was not done during the Prophet's (PBUH) lifetime, Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A) was eventually convinced by Hazrat Umar's persistence and entrusted the task to Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A).

Good to know

The first compilation of the Quran took place during the Caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A) after the Battle of Yamama (633 CE). Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A), who was one of the chief scribes of the revelation during the Prophet's (PBUH) time, was appointed to lead this monumental task. The compiled manuscript was kept with Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A), then passed to Hazrat Umar (R.A), and later to Hazrat Hafsa (R.A). This compilation later served as the basis for the official Uthmanic codex prepared during the Caliphate of Hazrat Usman (R.A).
