Quick fact: The Quran was compiled into a book form during the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A).

Explanation

After the Battle of Yamama, many Huffaz (memorizers of the Quran) were martyred, which raised concerns about the preservation of the Quran. Upon the advice of Hazrat Umar (R.A), Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A) entrusted Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A) with the task of compiling the Quran into a single book form. This was the first compilation of the Quran between two covers, and the compiled manuscript was kept with Hazrat Hafsa (R.A). Later, during the caliphate of Hazrat Usman (R.A), this same manuscript was used to prepare standardized copies sent to various regions.

Good to know

The compilation during Hazrat Abu Bakr's era is known as the first compilation (Jam'a al-Quran), while the standardization and distribution of official copies during Hazrat Usman's caliphate is called the second compilation. Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A), a young Ansari scribe who had written the revelation directly from the Prophet (PBUH), led the compilation committee. The compiled pages (Suhuf) were later passed from Hazrat Abu Bakr to Hazrat Umar, and then to Hazrat Hafsa (R.A).
