Quick fact: The first copy of the compiled Holy Quran was placed in the custody of Hazrat Hafsa (R.A), the daughter of Hazrat Umar (R.A) and a wife of the Prophet (PBUH).

Explanation

During the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A), the Quran was compiled into a single book (Mushaf) under the supervision of Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A). This compiled copy remained with Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) during his lifetime, then passed to Hazrat Umar (R.A), and after his martyrdom, it was entrusted to Hazrat Hafsa (R.A), who was both the daughter of Hazrat Umar (R.A) and a wife of the Prophet (PBUH). Later, during the caliphate of Hazrat Usman (R.A), this original copy was borrowed from Hazrat Hafsa (R.A) to prepare standard copies for distribution across the Muslim empire.

Good to know

The first compilation of the Quran was ordered by Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) after the Battle of Yamama, in which many Huffaz were martyred. Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A) led the compilation committee and collected the Quranic verses from written parchments, bones, and the memories of companions. After Hazrat Hafsa (R.A) passed away, the original Mushaf was retrieved by Marwan bin Hakam, the then governor of Madina, who had it destroyed to prevent any potential dispute, as the official Uthmani copies had already been standardized and widely circulated.
