Explanation

The conquest of Cyprus took place in 25 Hijri (around 646-647 CE) during the reign of the third Caliph, Hazrat Usman (R.A). This was a significant naval expedition led by Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan (R.A), who was the governor of Syria at the time. It marked the first major naval campaign in Islamic history, as Hazrat Umar (R.A) had previously been cautious about sea expeditions. The conquest demonstrated the expanding reach of the Islamic state into the Mediterranean region.

Good to know

Cyprus, a strategically located island in the eastern Mediterranean, was conquered through a combined naval and land operation. The campaign was personally approved by Hazrat Usman (R.A) after Muawiya (R.A) convinced him of the necessity of a naval force. The people of Cyprus agreed to pay jizya (tribute) under a peace treaty, similar to the terms offered to other conquered territories. This conquest paved the way for further Islamic naval expeditions in the Mediterranean, including the famous Battle of Dhat al-Sawari (Battle of the Masts).
