Explanation

Istelam refers to the act of touching or kissing the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) during Tawaf. It is a Sunnah practice performed at the start and end of each circuit around the Kaaba. If a pilgrim cannot reach the Black Stone due to crowding, they may simply raise their hand towards it and say "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar," which is also considered Istelam.

Good to know

The Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) is set in the eastern corner of the Kaaba and is believed to have been sent down from Paradise. During Hajj and Umrah, pilgrims perform Istelam as part of Tawaf, following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The term Istelam is distinct from Tawaf (circumambulation) and Sa'ee (walking between Safa and Marwa), which are separate rituals of Hajj and Umrah.
