Explanation

Ghazwa Ahzab (Battle of the Confederates) is called the Battle of Trench because, on the advice of Hazrat Salman Farsi (R.A), the Muslims dug a deep trench around Madina to defend against the massive allied army of Quraysh and other tribes. This innovative defensive strategy neutralized the enemy's numerical superiority and marked a turning point in the conflict between the Muslims and the Quraysh.

Good to know

Ghazwa Ahzab took place in Shawwal, 5 AH, when a confederation of Quraysh, Ghatafan, and other tribes—numbering around 10,000 men—besieged Madina. The trench (Khandaq) rendered their cavalry ineffective, and after nearly a month of siege, a fierce storm dispersed the allied forces. The Quran refers to this battle in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:9-25).
