Quick fact: The suggestion to dig a trench around Madinah during the Battle of Khandaq was given by Hazrat Salman Al-Farsi (R.A).

Explanation

Hazrat Salman Al-Farsi (R.A) was a Persian companion who was familiar with the defensive trench strategy used by the Persians. When the Muslims learned that a massive confederate army was marching toward Madinah, he proposed digging a deep trench on the vulnerable northern side of the city. This innovative defensive tactic was unfamiliar to the Arabs and proved highly effective, as the Quraysh and their allies were unable to cross it, ultimately leading to their retreat and a strategic victory for the Muslims.

Good to know

The Battle of Khandaq (also known as the Battle of Ahzab) took place in 5 AH (627 CE) when the Quraysh and allied tribes gathered an army of around 10,000 men to attack Madinah. The trench was approximately 5.5 km long, 9 meters wide, and 4.5 meters deep, dug over the course of about two weeks. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself participated in the digging alongside his companions, and several miracles were reported during the excavation.
