Quick fact: The Muslim warrior who killed the pagan champion Amr ibn Abd al-Wud during the Battle of the Trench was Hazrat Ali (RA).

Explanation

During the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwa Khandaq), the Quraysh warrior Amr ibn Abd al-Wud challenged the Muslims to single combat after crossing the trench. Hazrat Ali (RA) volunteered and, with the Prophet's (PBUH) permission and blessing, defeated and killed this formidable opponent. The Prophet (PBUH) famously remarked on this occasion that Ali's one strike on the day of Khandaq was superior to the worship of both mankind and jinn until the Day of Judgment.

Good to know

The Battle of the Trench (Ghazwa Khandaq/Ahzab) took place in 5 AH (627 CE) when the Quraysh and their allies laid siege to Madina. The trench was dug on the suggestion of Salman al-Farsi (RA). Amr ibn Abd al-Wud was considered one of the fiercest warriors of Arabia, said to be equal to a thousand horsemen. His defeat by Hazrat Ali (RA) was a major psychological blow to the confederate forces, contributing significantly to the Muslim victory.
