Explanation

The Battle of the Trench, also known as Ghazwa Khandaq or Ghazwa Ahzab, took place in 5 AH (627 AD) when the Quraysh and their allied tribes laid siege to Madina. On the suggestion of Salman Farsi (R.A), the Muslims dug a trench around the city, a defensive tactic unfamiliar to the Arabs, which effectively neutralized the enemy's numerical superiority. The siege lasted about a month before adverse weather and internal discord among the confederates forced them to retreat, marking a turning point in the struggle between the Muslims and the Quraysh.

Good to know

The Battle of the Trench occurred in Shawwal, 5 AH, following the Battle of Uhud (3 AH) and preceding the Treaty of Hudaibiya (6 AH). The confederate army numbered around 10,000 men, while the Muslim defenders were approximately 3,000. This battle is mentioned in Surah Al-Ahzab of the Holy Quran, which describes the siege and the divine help in the form of strong winds that dispersed the enemy forces.
