Quick fact: The arbitrator appointed in the matter of Banu Qurayza was Hazrat Sa'ad bin Mu'adh (R.A).

Explanation

After the Battle of Khandaq (Trench), the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza was besieged for violating the Charter of Madina by conspiring with the Quraysh. When they surrendered, they proposed that Hazrat Sa'ad bin Mu'adh (R.A), who was their former ally before Islam, be the arbitrator. Sa'ad (R.A) ruled according to the Torah that the fighting men be executed and women and children taken as captives, a judgment the Prophet (PBUH) confirmed as being in accordance with Allah's decree.

Good to know

The incident of Banu Qurayza took place in 5 AH immediately after the Battle of Khandaq. Hazrat Sa'ad bin Mu'adh (R.A) was the chief of the Aws tribe, which had previously been allied with Banu Qurayza. He had sustained a fatal wound during the Battle of Khandaq and was carried to the Prophet (PBUH) on a donkey to deliver his verdict. He passed away shortly after this judgment, and the Prophet (PBUH) said the Throne of Allah shook at his death.
