Explanation

The Battle of Trench, also known as Ghazwa Khandaq or the Battle of Ahzab, took place in Shawwal of 5 AH. It was a defensive battle in which Muslims, upon the suggestion of Salman Farsi (R.A), dug a trench around Madina to repel the attack of the allied forces of Quraysh and other tribes. This battle marked a turning point as the confederates failed to breach the trench and eventually retreated.

Good to know

The Battle of Trench (Ghazwa Khandaq) occurred in 5 AH when the Quraysh, along with several other tribes including the Banu Nadir and Ghatafan, formed a confederacy (Ahzab) of around 10,000 men to attack Madina. The trench, a Persian military tactic unfamiliar to the Arabs, was dug on the exposed northern side of Madina. The siege lasted about 27 days, and a severe windstorm ultimately dispersed the enemy forces.
