Quick fact: The mosque in Istanbul commonly known as the Blue Mosque is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque.

Explanation

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, built between 1609 and 1616 during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I, is popularly called the Blue Mosque because of the approximately 20,000 hand-painted blue Iznik tiles that adorn its interior walls. It is one of the most famous landmarks of Istanbul and remains a functioning mosque today. Its six minarets were a distinctive and controversial feature at the time, as only the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah had that many.

Good to know

The Blue Mosque was designed by the architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa, a student of the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. It is situated directly opposite the Hagia Sophia in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul. The mosque complex originally included a madrasa, a hospital, a public kitchen, and a market. The Blue Mosque is a prime example of classical Ottoman architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul.
