Quick fact: The idea of digging a trench around Madinah during the Battle of Khandaq was proposed by Salman Al-Farsi (R.A).

Explanation

Salman Al-Farsi (R.A) was a Persian companion who had experience with defensive warfare tactics used in Persia. He suggested digging a trench (khandaq) on the exposed northern side of Madinah, which was a novel strategy in Arabian warfare at the time. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) accepted this advice, and the trench proved highly effective in preventing the Quraysh and their allies from breaching the city's defenses during the battle.

Good to know

The Battle of Khandaq (also known as the Battle of Ahzab) took place in 5 AH (627 CE) when a confederate army of Quraysh and allied tribes besieged Madinah. The trench, approximately 5.5 km long, 9 meters wide, and 4.5 meters deep, was dug on the northern side where the city was vulnerable. The Prophet (PBUH) himself participated in the digging, and the entire trench was completed in about two weeks. The siege lasted around 27–30 days before the confederates withdrew due to harsh weather and internal discord.
