Explanation

The Battle of Khandaq, also known as the Battle of Ahzab (the Confederates), took place in Shawwal, 5 AH. It was a defensive battle in which, on the advice of Salman al-Farsi (R.A), the Muslims dug a trench around Madina to repel the combined attack of the Quraysh and their allied tribes. The siege lasted about a month and ended with the withdrawal of the confederate forces due to harsh weather and divine intervention in the form of a violent storm.

Good to know

The Battle of Khandaq (Trench) is named after the trench (khandaq) dug around the vulnerable northern side of Madina. This was a novel defensive tactic in Arabia, suggested by Salman al-Farsi (R.A). The Quraysh, along with the tribes of Ghatafan, Banu Nadir, and others, formed a confederacy (Ahzab) with an army of around 10,000 men against approximately 3,000 Muslims. The battle is mentioned in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:9-25) and marked a turning point, after which the Quraysh never again mounted a major offensive against the Muslims.
